Straight Eight Cucumbers are very dependable at producing prolific crops. These cucumbers are smooth, straight, deep green, 15-20 cm (6-8") long and 5-6 cm (2½”) wide with rounded blunt ends.  Early, vigorous and prolific, it tolerates mosaic virus well. It is a superb variety that has stood the test of time.  When mature, the plant height reaches around 30 cm, (12") without trellis and has vines that reach up to 1.8-2.4 m (6-8’).  Straight Eight has a climbing growth habit.   It makes a great slicing cucumber.

 

Growing Instructions:

 

Cucumbers are a popular garden vegetable that are easy to grow and produce an abundance of fruit in the right conditions. Cucumbers prefer full sun and well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before your last expected frost date, or direct sow seeds in the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds 1-2cm (½-1”) deep, spaced 60-90cm (24-36”) apart in rows spaced 120-180cm (48-72”) apart. Cucumber plants require support to climb, such as trellises or fences. Water regularly and deeply, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks during the growing season. Cucumbers are ready to harvest when they are dark green and about 15-20cm (6-8”) long. Pick cucumbers frequently to encourage more fruit production.

Soil Conditions: Well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Soil pH: 6.0-6.8. Planting Depth: Plant seeds 1-2cm (½-1”) deep. Germination: 7-10 days. Height at Maturity: Up to 2m (6.5ft) long. Days to Maturity: 50-70 days. Watering: Water regularly and deeply, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Sun/Shade: Full sun. Spacing after Thinning: Thin seedlings to 60-90cm (24-36”) apart.
