Golden Self-Blanching Celery is an heirloom variety from Europe. The plants are stocky, solid, thick, with the stalks that blanch easily. It is vigorous growing with upright medium green foliage. The roots are round, smooth and have good inner quality with high yields. The stocks grow vigorously, with large ribs, very thickly and closely set. Growing to a height of 40 - 60cm (16 - 24”) this dwarf variety is ideal for smaller gardens and unlike traditional celery which needs soil added around the stalks to produce pale stems, it produces naturally cream-coloured stalks with a crisp, crunchy texture and mild flavour, and if given a little light shading, the juiciness and delicacy of taste will improve even further. Golden Self Blanching has a compact growth that is ideal for an allotment or for smaller gardens.

Growing Instructions:

Celery is a cool-season crop that can be grown from seed or transplants. Start seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost date or purchase transplants from a local nursery. Choose a location with full sun exposure and well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If starting from seed, sow seeds 1cm (½”) deep and keep soil evenly moist during the germination period, which typically takes 14-21 days. Transplants should be set out 15-20cm (6-8”) apart in rows spaced 45-60cm (18-24”) apart. Celery requires consistent moisture throughout the growing season, so watering should be frequent and consistent. Mulching can help to maintain soil moisture levels. Celery prefers soil that is slightly acidic with a pH of 6.0-7.0. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks during the growing season. Celery can take 90-120 days to mature, depending on the variety. Harvest stalks when they are 20-30cm (8-12”) tall and the desired thickness. Stalks can be harvested by cutting them off at the base of the plant, or by gently twisting and pulling them off. Leaves can also be harvested as needed throughout the growing season.
