Tall Utah is a very dependable dark green celery that grows between 45-61 cm (18-24”) tall.  It is a compact plant with tightly folded hearts, and broad, thick, well-rounded stalks.  It holds its form and color in the field well.  Celery is a cool season biennial (2 year for seed) from the Umbelliferae family which include vegetables such as carrot, dill, parsley and parsnips.  It is a long season crop that can be tricky to grow as it will not tolerate heat and can be difficult to transplant.  Mature celery lasts into winter with light frost protection.

Growing Instructions:

Celery is a cool-season crop that can be grown from seed or transplants. Start seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost date or purchase transplants from a local nursery. Choose a location with full sun exposure and well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If starting from seed, sow seeds 1cm (½”) deep and keep soil evenly moist during the germination period, which typically takes 14-21 days. Transplants should be set out 15-20cm (6-8”) apart in rows spaced 45-60cm (18-24”) apart. Celery requires consistent moisture throughout the growing season, so watering should be frequent and consistent. Mulching can help to maintain soil moisture levels. Celery prefers soil that is slightly acidic with a pH of 6.0-7.0. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks during the growing season. Celery can take 90-120 days to mature, depending on the variety. Harvest stalks when they are 20-30cm (8-12”) tall and the desired thickness. Stalks can be harvested by cutting them off at the base of the plant, or by gently twisting and pulling them off. Leaves can also be harvested as needed throughout the growing season.
