The French Breakfast radish is an heirloom variety that has been grown since at least the late 1870's.   French breakfast produces an oblong radish that is approximately 7-8 cm (3”) long and 2 cm (¾-1”) in diameter.  They have rich scarlet red roots with white tips that are crisp, mild and surprisingly sweet. A favourite radish type that has stood the test of time.  Although frost hardy, roots will not tolerate freezing. Irrigation is essential for best flavour and root consistency.

Growing Instructions:

Radishes are a fast-growing, cool-season crop that can be direct-sown in early spring or fall. Choose a location with well-drained soil rich in organic matter and full sun exposure. Soil pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0. Sow seeds 1cm (½”) deep, spacing them 2.5-5cm (1-2”) apart in rows 15-30cm (6-12”) apart. Keep the soil moist and cool to promote germination; seeds should sprout in 3-7 days. Thin seedlings when they are 2.5-5cm (1-2”) tall to one plant every 2.5-7.5cm (1-3”) apart. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season. Radishes can be harvested when they are young and tender, usually in 20-30 days after sowing. Pull them out of the ground or cut them at the soil level.

Radishes prefer consistent watering throughout the season. They can bolt and become pithy in hot weather, so plant them in early spring or late fall, or provide shade during hot weather. Radishes can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Soil Conditions: Well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Soil pH: 6.0-7.0 Planting Depth: Sow seeds 1cm (½”) deep.
