Sweeter than Turnips, these globe-shaped rutabagas have a bright purple top that covers the top two thirds of the 10-15 cm (4-6") globes.   The roots keep very well in winter storage.  They are hardy enough to survive minor freezes.  Rutabagas do not like heat.  They will become  woody and inedible if exposed to heat. Water regularly and evenly.

Growing Instructions:

Rutabagas are cool-season root vegetables that can be planted in early spring or late summer, depending on your climate. Choose a location with full sun exposure and well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Rutabagas prefer a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Sow rutabaga seeds 1.25cm (1/2”) deep, spaced 7.5-10cm (3-4”) apart in rows spaced 30-45cm (12-18”) apart. Keep the soil consistently moist during the germination period, which takes around 7-10 days. Thin seedlings to 15-20cm (6-8”) apart when they are 7.5-10cm (3-4”) tall. Rutabagas require consistent moisture throughout the growing season, but be careful not to overwater. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks during the growing season.

Rutabagas can be harvested when they are 7-10cm (3-4”) in diameter, which usually takes 90-120 days after planting. They are best harvested after a frost, as it improves their flavor. Rutabagas can be stored in a cool, dry place for several months. Soil Conditions: Well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Soil pH: 6.0-7.5 Planting Depth: Sow seeds 1.25cm (1/2”) deep.
