Growing Instructions:

Gourds are a unique and versatile plant that can be grown for use in crafts, decoration, and even as a food source. Gourds come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from small ornamental gourds to larger gourds that can be used for birdhouses, utensils, and other crafts. Gourds prefer warm, sunny locations with well-drained soil. Plant gourd seeds directly in the ground after the last frost, or start them indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost in your area. Plant seeds 2.5-5cm (1-2”) deep and 30-60cm (12-24”) apart in hills or mounds that are spaced 1.2-1.8m (4-6ft) apart. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until the seedlings emerge, which should take 7-14 days. Once the seedlings emerge, water deeply once a week, and more often during hot, dry weather. Gourds do not require much fertilizer, but can benefit from a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Train the vines to climb a trellis or fence to save space and promote airflow, which can help prevent disease. Harvest the gourds when the stems start to dry and turn brown, and the gourds are hard to the touch. Let the gourds dry in a warm, dry location with good airflow for several weeks before using or storing.
